The Season of Everything: Holding It Together (and Letting Some Go)

By Kristin Cambron Steele | Mindful Motions Yoga and Wellness – The Neighborhood Flow

For parents, fall isn’t exactly calm. 🍂

September arrives with the whirlwind of back-to-school routines—school supplies, new schedules, carpools, homework, and extracurriculars.

A few weeks of steady rhythm may follow—a brief, fleeting breath—before the storm of the holiday season begins. Candy wrappers on the floor, schedules that never end, and everyone’s expectations—including your own… sound familiar?

Even here in Dallas, where leaves rarely fall, a cool front can feel like relief—but it doesn’t last long before the heat, both literal and metaphorical, returns.

As Halloween approaches, the whirlwind grows. 🎃

The parties.The group costumes.The excitement.The tears.

As adults, we know our kids are going to experience all the feels and even we sometimes feel left out too!

We worry about our older children—will they find trustworthy, reliable friends? How do we protect them, offer support, and still let them embrace their independence?

The gentle rhythm of early fall quickly gives way to decorating, cooking, shopping, planning gatherings, and social obligations.

And the holidays aren’t just Halloween through Christmas.

October alone is rich with cultural and religious celebrations:

  • Rosh Hashanah, Yom Kippur, and Sukkot bring reflection, community, and tradition for Jewish families.

  • Diwali, the festival of lights, is celebrated with rituals, lights, sweets, and visits with loved ones.

Each brings joy… and preparation, planning, and sometimes stress. This is when self-care matters most. 💛 And yet, it’s often the first thing to go. Yoga and mindful practices can provide an anchor. 🧘‍♀️

Even a weekly practice can reconnect us with our breath, calm racing thoughts, and help us approach the season with a little more patience, a little more ease, and a little more joy.

It’s not about perfection.

It’s about giving ourselves permission to

Life gets messy and some of us struggle to connect!

pause, breathe, and simply be. 🌿

Community matters, too. 🤝

Being with others—whether in-person or virtually—reminds us we are not alone.

Shared practice fosters compassion, belonging, and connection—especially when the season brings feelings of isolation or overwhelm.

Tips for Navigating Holiday Stress with Kids:

🌟 Move Together: Even five minutes of stretching or playful yoga with your kids can release tension. Turn it into a game or link it to a holiday theme—tree pose for a Christmas tree, warrior poses for a Diwali celebration of light.

🌟 Mindful Moments: Pause to notice sights, sounds, or smells during holiday prep. Take a few deep breaths before a party or gathering.

🌟 Set Boundaries: Saying no is okay. Protecting your family’s time and energy reduces overwhelm.

🌟 Create Small Rituals: Light a candle, play calming music, or share a gratitude circle at the table. Small rituals give rhythm and calm amidst the busy season.

🌟 Support Independence with Presence: Encourage children to navigate social situations while reassuring them of your guidance and support. Yoga can help you stay centered and patient, modeling calm resilience.

🌟 Connect with Community: Friends, family, faith communities, and classes like ours can help ease isolation and remind kids they’re part of something bigger.

This season, consider giving yourself and your family the gift of presence. 💖

Small, consistent practices—a few deep breaths, gentle stretches, or a weekly yoga session—can transform the holidays from overwhelming to soulful.

Our well-being matters. Our connection matters. And sometimes, that’s the most meaningful gift of all.

Not because you should “do more”…But because you deserve a reset.
